Tech news digest July 2015 (Firefox focus mode and flash zero day vulnerabilities).

Hey guys. This is what’s been going on the last few days, since it was too much to catch up I decided to make a digest of news.

  • Firefox’s latest update added the “Enter view mode” which is great to eliminate all the distractions and focus on reading without all the pop-ups and ads!
  • If you noticed that flash doesn’t work on your browser anymore, that’s because of the “Zero-Day Vulnerabilities” discovered on Windows Explorer. Which might explain why I got a ton of security updates for it although I never use it!
  •  Windows has finally chosen the build for the release with a clever name 10240 for the slow and fast ring. {Source}
  • Microsoft suspends Windows 10 Insider updates in preparation for RTM {Source}

How did you like the tech news segment? Is it a keeper?

Where did the Windows 10 inspiration came from?

Hey there dear readers. How have you been?
Windows 10 seems like an innovated revolutionary system. Where did they come up with all those great ideas? You must be wondering!

Hmmm?! From Linux perhaps?

Let’s take a look at the facts, shall we?

  • 1998 KDE 1.0 brought multiple desktops. When did Windows adopt that? 2015!
  • 2011 Unity brought the desktop on-line search. When did Windows adopt that? 2015!
  • 2011 Unity brought Window spread. When did Windows adopt that? 2015!
  • 2014 Ubuntu – KDE brought true convergence (Single code base) When did Windows adopt that?
  • 2015! (False convergence) with Different code base!!

Check the info-graphic for more detail.

Can we call that stealing? No! That’s not how open source works. What Windows did here was slapping a label on an existing thing and calling it their own, I don’t think it’s stealing or unethical. But the people should know where the ideas originated from and have the right to decide for their own.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, one could say. I mean it took after Linux so much. And as the old saying goes: “If you can’t beat them, join them” with an NT twist, mimic them so much in private and curse them in public. That’s how to make business.

So Windows 10 is Ubuntu 11.11 with an overpriced tag? Maybe that’s why they won’t release a Windows 11!! (just kidding)..

It’s 10 so they break the habit

of names and of course to escape the age old install routine that confuses Windows 9 with Windows 98!

At least Microsoft has it’s own code! While Mac closed the source of Minix (Unix based system) and sold it as Mac OS under the BSD license!!

Big time companies steal ideas all the time and get away with it. The really clever ones like Mac steals then sews who steals from them?! Brilliant!!

Anyway. I’m a bit interested to see how will Windows 10 will fair in the real world. A world ruled and dominated by Microsoft. And by forcing the people to upgrade to it and even giving it free for a while. I think the way is paved!

If Windows 10 succeeds it’s going to be a hit. If it failed then it’s going to be a disaster!! They want to make it the alpha dog. But what if the dog was dead on arrival?

I’d like to know what do you have in mind. So press that sweet comment section and let me know what you have in mind 🙂

Have a good day.

Windows 10 the last Windows to be produced? My take on it inside

Hey there you guys. I hope you are having a good day
As I try to pace myself and post only once a day. But news like this make me break my rules. As I continue to bring the latest update about Windows 10

“Windows to stop producing Windows versions”!! Source
After we confirmed the bold statement. Let’s take a look at what it means?

If you thought that Windows XP overstayed it’s welcome.Think again!! after XP there was Vista, 7 and of course Windows 8. And it’s support finally ended in April of 2014. Windows 10 is here to stay apparently. With the company stating that There won’t be a Windows 11. According to the statement. Windows is pushing a new business model that has me feeling my pocket already! What do we know so far is that Windows 10 will be free for all as an update for one year. And that your license has to be genuine. And how the updates will be delivered. It’s supposed to come sometime this year.
Question is:

How will Microsoft make it’s money if it doesn’t force us to upgrade every three years? (Opinion piece)

I have some speculations based on what Microsoft has released so far.

    1. Users who will install Windows 10 fresh will have to pay a full license fee.
    2. Users who have pirated versions of Windows will have to pay a full license fee to remove version restrictions.
    3. Users who want to have the free upgrade will have to buy a license (if not already genuine) of an older version: 7, 8 etc ..
    4. Upgrades will not be free (You will pay for updates and upgrades).
    5. I am sensing a none Microsoft block (As in Surface tablets) You have to run genuine Microsoft software, or you are stuck with an over priced child-pad!! (Confirmation needed on the Surface tablet bit).
    6. Perhaps do what Adobe does with the creative cloud and what Microsoft is already doing with Office356.
    7. I think Windows will be more Xbox Live! (Pay wise of course)!!

I believe that Microsoft will gain a lot more than selling standalone versions of it’s software, things like:

        1. Limits Piracy. The new licensing system makes it more difficult for pirates to “crack” versions as it’s upgraded regularly.
        2. More money
Some people like to pay 20$ a month rather than 300$ at once.
        3. More focused development.
Instead of coming up with a marketing scheme every 2-3 years. They get to focus on one system. While still making money out of it.
        4. Easier support.
When enough people migrate to Windows10. Support will be so much easier.
As I said. These points are of my current perspective based on the information I have now! And my final verdict is to wait until Microsoft unveils it’s plans!
Have a lovely day dear fans. Let me know what you have to say in the comments section below!

Make Gimp 2.8 Look Like Adobe PhotoShop CS3!

Hello There and Welcome to a new tech tip.

          1. Download the zipped file Gimp Themes v1.0 and install it on your computer, it’s less than 2 mbs. *There is a version for Linux here.

          2. open gimp, go to windows single window mode and click it, it will collect the previously scattered windows and make it more organized, but don’t edit their look just yet.

          3. Copy all of the contents of the Bin folder From [C:Program FilesGIMP-2.0] to [C:Program FilesGIMP2] And the folder Engines from
          [C:Program FilesGIMP-2.0libgtk-2.02.10.0engines] to [C:Program FilesGIMP 2libgtk-2.02.10.0engines]
And  the folder Themes contents from [C:Program FilesGIMP-2.0sharethemes] to [C:Program FilesGIMP 2sharethemes]

          4.  Run the application Gimpthemes-v1.0.exe located in [C:Program FilesGIMP 2bin] to select any theme you like from the ones installed (use Aroura mid night for maximum effect) then click OK.
Run gimp 2.8 normally, After success all the tools will be gone, simply drag the vertical line at both screen ends to restore them, then arrange the tools as you like.

That is all, I hope you try it and like it, please comment.
          Have a wonderful day.
