Life lessons learned, site update included!

I’ve taken some choices in life that seemed at the time to be casted in stone, little did I know that life has its lessons to teach me and to show me the error of my ways, and today I decided to share these revelations with you!

Coffee anyone?

For a while I quit drinking coffee because I thought it contributed to my anxiety attacks. I didn’t take the fact that I put too much coffee and sugar into my mug into consideration,  that probably triggered the anxiety attacks.

Coffee anyone?
Coffee anyone?

Later I found myself forced to drink coffee just to sober up in the morning.

My everlasting love and hate relationship with Facebook

If anyone blogged more about the dangers of Facebook then we need to start a fan club! In many posts (in Arabic and English) I deemed Facebook as the devil and urged everyone to delete their profiles.

I kept saying that it took my life away and rendered me sleepless and distracted.
Strange enough when I logged to delete my account I felt guilty for doing so and that my eyes burned me as if I saw something I wasn’t supposed to see! The power of thought never seizes to amaze me!

I was back on the site a year later to create a page for my blog, I admitted that in a previous post.

This means one way or another that I have a profile on the site and that I use it from time to time to post to my page, I’m not active on the it and still think it’s bad for productivity tho.

Whats the lesson from these stories?

The lesson learn from my coffee and Facebook abstinence that moderation is the key

Moderation is the key!
Moderation is the key!

Facebook didn’t take my life away, I let it do so by logging in too often! And I put too much coffee in my mug which made me jumpy and more anxious.

Coffee in small amounts is a great beverage and Facebook has benefits despite all the bad things I said about it (and stand by to a certain degree).

One more lesson to add

Later in life I had bad experiences with a couple of less than perfect android phones, which lead me to the conclusion that ALL android phones are bad and that I should preach that to everyone that hears me.

Before that I resisted getting a smartphone and I was willing to pick a fight over the idea, I was into QWERTY phones which are great for writing fast, but not much more than that sadly.

I saw smartphones with touch screens as unusable overly priced under powered PC attachments and that PCs were the real deal, and Samsung’s touchwiz made things worse for me!

I took my laptop to school in public transportation and even when traveling abroad, let me tell you it is very stressful going around with a laptop fearing that it would be stolen at any minute, let alone the fact that the laptop is a heavy piece of equipment (5.2 pounds to be exact, charger and other things I carry around not included!), and to make things worse I didn’t have a backup of my important files!! I set a password over the HDD to prevent data tempering in case the laptop was stolen tho.

Not using a smartphone while travelling meant I wasn’t benefiting from the VOIP services smart phones support like Whatsapp and Viber, more cost to be added to the travel expenses because I won’t get a smartphone!

Looking back I must of looked very stupid using my laptop in public to write notes or to watch something, while the people I looked down on had much lighter and efficient devices that served many purposes.

Later on as my laptop got older and started to show it’s age, a smartphone became my companion on the road and my laptop turned into a PC!

Lesson learn here is that generalization is always bad and a sign of an immature mind, passing judgment and being stubborn is also very bad and limits one’s personal growth.

In the end I think it’s important to look back and evaluate the choices and decisions made and see if they were the right call or not, everyday is a new day and we shouldn’t take our old mistakes with us forward.

Site updates

  • On a lighter note I reached 175,000 views on my blog. Not half bad huh?
  • I also added a Disqus widget so placing comments would be easier!
  • I set up a poll to see if it’s easier to use for you guys as some readers reported the comments section isn’t visible on the mobile version of the site.
  • The poll results were 100% yes! (two inputs only to be honest).

What do you think of this post? Did you have a recent change of heart you would like to share with me? Leave it in the comments below.

Whatsapp sharing your phone number with facebook? Privacy??

Whatsapp had added a new entry on the company blog saying that it changed the privacy agreement to allow sharing your phone number with Facebook the parent company, does this sound like a surprise to you?

Whatsapp changing the game

Since 2014 Whatsapp said it will test with features to ensure that it stays free after it canceled the 1$ per year fee, but until yesterday no one knew what the plans were.
Whatsapp will share your number with Facebook for advertising purposes, to help
deliver better service and connect you to companies and service providers based on your friends and interests, while promising not to share your number with anyone and emphasizing the fact they added end to end encryption.

Isn’t this spamming?

Whatsapp thinks that it’s OK to send messages like these, you are already receiving messages on your mobile and receive phone calls, why not Whtasapp messages with content like this?

There is a way out of this tho, even partly.

How to keep your number from being shared?

Future versions of Whatsapp will have an option which you can enable or disable to op out of the phone number sharing, but the rest of the newly updated privacy policy will apply to you as soon as you open Whatsapp!

So this is the price of being free?

I think I like the old 1$ per year policy, it’s not so bad once you think of the huge privacy violations Facebook and now Whatsapp are committing towards it’s users!
Nothing is for free, everything has a price and if you aren’t paying for it, then you are probably paying a different kind of price, you are being the merchandise!
It’s a pretty sweet deal I must admit, free calls and unlimited free text messages,  but if your privacy matters to you, the calling price would be too high.

Any alternatives?

Lets go back to February of 2014 when Facebook announced its monstrous acquisition of Whatsapp in a record breaking 12 billion dollar sale, people starting migrating to Telegram like crazy, they knew the age of private free communication was over!

Telegram VS Whatsapp

I’ve blogged about comparing Whatsapp to Telegram some time back, right now Telegram is the sure fire way for a secure chatting experience, as for Whatsapp, I’ve uninstalled it already!

Say no to Facebook

How do you feel about this sudden change? Do you still trust Whatsapp and Facebook with your privacy? I’ve blogged about leaving Facebook and still in favor of unplugging from it.

Blog updates and fan reactions, going for 100K views

This could be the last update I provide before reaching my 100,000 views milestone which I have been building towards for years now!
To begin my update properly, I have to thank the fans from around the world (mostly Libya) for showing me their support and standing behind me, it really makes my day even if you think it doesn’t!

Positive feedback
Just an example of positive feedback I’m getting from fans

Following up on my latest post (unplanned downtime) I began to look into second device options (still don’t know exactly what to get, any help?), and reading this article changed my views about my work flow completely, a must read if you are stuck in a third world country that’s struggling, funny thing about that post is that it relates to two of my posts, unplanned downtime and blogging from a civil war zone, so think of it as a survival guide in a country going down the tube, there is an Arabic version too if you like.

I finally finished creating my Facebook page, it took so long because I maxed out on friends and then turned my profile into a page (yes you can do that!). Despite my opinion against Facebook, I have to admit it’s my biggest visitor source, I can’t just let that go to waste without building on it, can I?
Here is the link to the page.

Hey! I have 5,000 friends 😀

I’ve started blogging on other sites too, lately I’ve posted on Itwadi and the feedback was rather positive, the post is in Arabic, expect to see my posts in other blogs very soon! I even started a section on my blog to collect all my guest posts in one place! It has only one post, but it’s going to change very soon god willing!

My fan feedback is very important to me, I wanted to what kind of posts you would find interesting. The poll was on the blog home page for 2 weeks, and not a single vote was casted! Luckily I put the same poll on Twitter and got some feed back I could use, the result was: 40% in favor of technical posts,
40% for Libyan affairs, and 20% for Diaries. No clear edge here, but I’ll try my best to give the fans what they want, and maybe to try on vlogging for a change.

I created a new youtube channel, I’m yet to add a proper user name to it, I need to get 100 subscribers first, subscribe please 😀
I will post my 100,000 video on it once I make it and reach 100K, I’m still wondering whether to make an Arabic video with English subtitles or vice-versa, as it turns out Youtube doesn’t allow multiple audio sources on one video,  and I’m not open to the idea of posting two videos (when the idea was pitched my fan base was mostly English speaking, my blog caught the Libyan attention after the passport post series, and still does) uploading on video will be painful enough!

Page views number
Isn’t that a nice page view number?

Thank you for reading this rather detailed update, please tell me what you think in the comments section below, and share the post with your people using the social media buttons 🙂
