A healthy kind of giving up

I haven’t posted to my blog in a few weeks (and a bit more than that in English), the reason is simply because I have been too busy.
These last few weeks before Ramadan were intense, a lot of work to be done in a small time frame, however I haven’t finished my rather long task list.

Job hunt

I’ve taken some time off work to focus on more important things in life, this job isn’t for me, perhaps if they pay me 3 times as much I’d reconsider it. So for the time being I’m accepting job offers.

Libya

I’ve blogged for years about issues in Libya and ways to solve them, that took time and effort and taxed a toll on my mental state in general, that’s why I’m not doing it anymore.

I’ve realized that people made peace with the current situation and decided to go with the flow it’s much easier than admitting that they did wrong and attempting to rectify the wrong doing. To each his own.

Corruption

Libya is one of the most corrupt countries in the world, this can be the explanation for many illogical things that happen on daily basis, it’s a vile fiend that suffocates Libya helplessly. Will there be a solution ever?

To new ways

I’ve got a new phone and I am trying to use it as my main device (blogging included), the experience is better than I expected, but not as good as I need it to be.
More details in a future blog post.

Blog comments

Until a couple of days the comments section was open for anyone to leave a piece of their minds there, but after the surge in spam comments (I find 5-6 new ones every day), I decided to only let people with registered G-mail accounts to leave a comment on my blog, I will keep it that way until the spammers give up.

Giving up isn’t defeat, it’s victory

Reading history books taught me so much about Libya and the Libyan character, they have been like this since the beginning of time, always will be like this and they will never change.  And I don’t have another lifetime to spend like this. Time for a new challenge.

Ramadan Mubarak

It’s the second day of Ramadan and my head is killing me already, noise amplified a thousand times inside my skull. Maybe I should include that sensation to the Wednesday post? (Not really).
Happy blessed Ramadan to everyone .

Thanks for reading this post, I’ll see you in a new post soon enough.
Leave your comments below, unless you are that annoying spammer, then don’t!

I haven’t abandoned my blog, yet!

It’s been a while since I last blogged, I’ve been busy lately and sitting down to blog wasn’t exactly the natural thing to do.

Words to live by

I keep blogging about productivity and ways to make blogging consistent, well it’s not always the case, my laptop is having issues (which I will be blogging about in detail in the coming days), with it being my main blog machine, I’ve earned myself a holiday!

No of-fence, get it?

Current situation in here?

You know what? I’ve given up on this country and it’s people!
Have you looked at them dancing like idiots in the square while everything is falling apart? Try rallying up the same people for a protest about deteriorating living conditions, what a joke..

Slight blog changes

I’ve set up my adsense about a year ago and I’ve noticed that it’s not increasing at all, turns out many readers have the adblock addon in browsers, well from now on this blog has the anti- adblock, you get the picture.
And I’ve changed the fonts a little bit, I hope you like it (or not, I don’t really care).

A new job

Yes I am working on something new, it’s not guaranteed to achieve anything but again what is? At least it’s better than dealing with half-wit teenagers having identity crisis, the politically correct term for that phase is “college”, but who am I to joke about that?
I didn’t quit, and I don’t intend to, think of it as a sabbatical leave, let’s hope that doesn’t suck as well!

I’m supposed to be on a vacation!

Yea, with a passport that doesn’t go anywhere and no money in a militia controlled state, might as well just binge watch shows while passing out on the couch, what a way to spend youth, really..
Because standing in long queues for hours on end to gain access to basic needs isn’t an Olympic sport.

Final words

If you couldn’t tell already by the apparent tune of frustration in my writing, I’m fed up of this situation, and I must do something to get myself out of this rut.

Hopefully you are having a better day dear reader.

Understanding sleep cycles for better sleep

I’m known for being a productivity freak, so this post caters to that niche of mine.
Sleep is a vital part of our lives, and studies suggest that we spend one third of our lives sleeping.
So a good night sleep is not to be taken lightly.

A fair warning: This post isn’t based on a doctor’s advice, I’m not a doctor and this shouldn’t be treated as medical advice, if you have troubles sleeping please consult a real doctor!

For this post, I’m going to talk about sleep cycles and how understanding them can improve the quality of your sleep, and a great tool to help you harness the power of sleep cycles (and tools to avoid).

What are sleep cycles?

Sleeping isn’t a single phase, it’s divided to several stages that repeat themselves in cycles, the stages are: lights sleep, deep sleep and dream state.
According to this scientific finding if you wake up right during light sleep you would feel that you had enough sleep, waking up in the middle however causes headaches and discomfort.

Knowing that a sleep cycle takes about 90 minutes, you can easily predict your sleeping pattern and set an alarm accordingly, but that can be troublesome after a while.

Here is where the apps come to play!

There are several applications out there for Android (I don’t know about iOS) that can help you with determining the perfect time to wake up.

Apps to avoid

Apps like sleep bot “monitor” your sleep by recording your noise to determine the best time to wake you up, and that is a big no – no in my book!

Somewhere in the middle

There is a web app called sleepyti.me that helps you predict a sleep cycle, it’s perfect for those who want a minimal phone or system and are willing to compromise some of the functionality.

The app I use

ZzZ sleepy timer is a perfect balance between minimalist needs and functionality, it has a very simple user interface and comes with very limited permissions, making it perfect for people with privacy concerns, it is also ad free till the time of this writing.

You can use it to set an alarm for waking up later, or tell it when you want to sleep. And it will calculate the upcoming sleeping cycles and determine the ideal one to wake up upon.

If you doubt the importance of a good nights sleep, then try being woke up in the middle of the night or when napping in the afternoon (hurts like a Wednesday, doesn’t it?).

Fatigue Management

I remember when I worked for Schlumberger that I took a course called fatigue management, one of the important topics in that course was sleep and how to improve the quality of ones sleep. Apparently my manger and “mentor” didn’t hear of this course or ignore it on purpose..

How is your sleep dear reader? Do you use any applications to help you sleep at night? If so, what are they?

Let me know what you this in the comments section below, and I hope that you find this post useful.

Why do I hate Wednesday?

Everyone who has been following me on social media knows that I’m not a huge fan of Wednesday, in fact I don’t like that day at all.
Hate is such a strong emotion, isn’t it?

For a German translation of this post, please click here.

Applying logic to emotions?

Emotions are just that, you cannot analyze them or come up with a list of compelling reasons why you love one thing and hate the other.  Trying to analyze feelings is a bit futile and a bit nonsensical, but let’s try to dig deeper into my utter hatred of Wednesday.

Origins of hate

It goes back to my college days, when Wednesday had the most lectures, with the worst professors (and I use the term professor loosely), and most of the time it seemed like Wednesday was a meet-up for everyone I despised.

Remember her? That’s Wednesday from the Addams family, charming, isn’t she?

How does a Wednesday feel?

I’ll try to compare it to some common physical pains to get the point across: It’s similar to the chronic pains that kick in the most inappropriate of times, the grinding of knees from driving too much in rush hour, the acidic burns of the stomach ulcer, the awful feeling you get on the first day of getting a flu, and that loud painful alarm and vibration headache generated by your phone that never really gets out of your head even if you drink a jug of coffee. That pressing feeling caused by a combination of stress and anxiety that something bad is going to happen, to me that’s what a Wednesday feels like.

And the bad lunch is always a Wednesday, Always..

Other reasons aren’t as clear

Tragic events on a personal level happened on a Wednesday,  two that I could recall clearly that had catastrophic events on me were both Wednesdays (that I’m really not ready to talk about publicly), and the day that I’ve quit my job in Schlumberger was a Wednesday too – a tough day to say the least – the nasty flu symptoms I described above also started on a Wednesday.

It could be a case of bias thinking or a pattern that I only see that doesn’t exist. Connecting the invisible dots lead to only one conclusion that I despise Wednesdays.

The term “Hump day” didn’t create itself, you know.

Showing some love

If Wednesday was a person, I’d hug him tightly, around the neck mostly; and choke until the poor bastard’s eyes pop out. Then I’d set the whole week on fire just for the hell of it.
That’s how much I like Wednesday.

Garfield hates his Mondays and I hate my Wednesdays, and for now it seems like things are going to stay the same.

Hating 1/7 of my life isn’t exactly a smart idea, and I’d like to program myself to like – or at least – tolerate Wednesdays. But I don’t think it’s happening any time soon.

What about you? Do you have a day that you don’t like so much? How about sharing your hate in the comment section below?
And if it’s Wednesday, well join the club!
