The thoughts of an overworked and unhappy worker!

I apologize to my readers for not posting my weekly post last week. It’s been a hectic week in which I didn’t get enough time to do anything that I enjoy (blogging included) so I took these minutes out of my jammed packed schedule to let the readers know whats going on with me.

What’s with the energy drink can?

An energy drink isn’t exactly the healthiest thing I could inject into my system but it beats falling asleep in traffic and ramming someone’s car from behind. And with the sugar and coffee prices soaring way out of reach this seemed like a good idea at the time, even if it means breaking my personal rule of not drinking energy drinks!

You know it’s a busy week when I have an energy drink, and I rarely do!

My image of a working man

I always had a tough time as kid visualizing what will I be when I grow up, my image of a working man was shaped after my father (naturally), the kind that gets out in the morning and comes back in the afternoon to have lunch and take a nap, then do whatever in the afternoon.

Something in the fashion of classical TV shows from the 50’s where the husband returns home saying the classical: “Honey, I’m home” to his loving wife, then changes his clothes into pajamas, sits on his favorite chair to read the news paper while his dog brings him his house slippers kind of thing.

But the reality is far off from that!!

I’m home!!

What do I do for a living?

What I do for a living is that I’m a teaching assistant at a local technical college. Due to the economical situation I am not getting paid yet, it’s been a few months and I haven’t received a dime, which meant that I need to look for another job, and I did.

Times are hard! One job won’t be enough to support a single guy (let alone a family) as the dollar goes to an all time high -so far- against the Libyan dinar (7.30 dinars per 1 US dollar). I made a meme to describe the situation, and because I didn’t watermark it everyone stole it and I lost the credit for my work, sigh!

The dollar killing the dinar!

Leading a “double” life

When studying in college I always secretly admired the guys who worked while studying, they seemed pretty interesting!

They had double lives and they seemed a bit detached and way cooler than little old me because I seemed so hung up on my school work and had nothing else, later when I had a double life of my own I knew that it wasn’t all fun and games!

No one has ever told me that I needed excellent time management skills and that goofing off wasn’t allowed when working multiple jobs, so I learned that the hard way!

All work and no play makes jack a dull boy

In this case I’m jack, working on multiple chores at the same time has drained me (to be completely honest I enjoy working on the wrestling show for example, it’s my day job that I’m complaining about here) so much I forgot to play and have some fun, so I decided to do just that!

I installed a couple of classic “retro” games on my computer (Tetris and bejweled) and decided to take sometime each day to play and relax -you know you are getting older when playing games becomes a to do list item, rather than the natural inclination!-.
These games keep me refreshed and entertained a little, I will try to keep playing them as often as I work so I keep a balance.

Time to work!

It’s funny how everyone I talk to tell me that this is the age of hard wok and that I should be happy and appreciative that I’m out there and gaining experience, and I completely agree with that, I only have one issue here, I have noting to show for it!
I feel overworked and unhappy.

The government who hired new employees like myself can’t expect us to work for free like that, my moral is at an all time low and everyday I drag myself to work like a zombie while repeating an affirmation that I made to describe how I feel: “You don’t pay me enough to care, and the last time I checked you don’t pay me at all!”.

We need our salaries to continue living paycheck to paycheck (which is considered to be a modern form of slavery by the way) let alone not being paid at all!!

Financial crisis

My unpaid “salary” is less than 85$ per month, and it goes without saying that the prices of everything go up with the dollar, while our money is stuck in the banks losing it’s value by the day.

I went to my bank branch -and I use the term loosely here- to see if I’m able to draw any amount out of my account, it’s been seven months since I’ve drawn any money!
I found people sleeping on mats in front of the bank, they told me that they spent two nights in a row waiting for the branch to open and give out money, and as expected the branch didn’t have any money so they spent a third night in front of the bank.

The draw limit has been set to 200 dinars per day for ATM machines (less than 30 dollars) and since most machines are out of service, the few ones that work has people lining up in front of it for hours to be able to draw.

Which brings me to a point I blogged about sometime ago..

A city wide strike

I’ve blogged in October about how the situation is getting worse and that the people in Tripoli should have a strike in hope of a change without protesting and possibly getting someone hurt (or killed). Here I find myself in a real conundrum!
On one hand I have lectures to give next week and I’m looking forward to doing that, but if I went and taught a class during the strike I’d be contradicting myself because I blogged about the strike way before they suggested the idea (I am not a hipster!), I haven’t decided whether to go or not yet.

Some blogging thoughts and notes

My blog is receiving the usual weekly stampede of desperate lurkers trying to get a passport, it’s like steroids making my blog bigger but not making it better!
I don’t promote my content heavily on twitter anymore because Twuffer decided to change the schedule policy from unlimited scheduling to 50 tweets per month, and I don’t like that at all, so my promotion is done manually.
What I do like is the new blogger interface, finally they have changed something about it!
And for those who are counting my blog has reached a 168 thousand views.

This too shall pass

I like this saying, it has wise roots and deep meaning to it. The story goes that a Persian king asked his advisor to come up with a saying that can make him happy when upset, upset when happy and it has to be short enough so it can  be engraved on a ring, so the wise man came up with: “this too shall pass”.

I keep reminding myself that these tough times will pass eventually and better times -hopefully- awaits us.

So you can think of this longer post as a way for making up for not posting last week.

What do you think of this post? And will a strike change the situation from better to worse?
Please let me know what you think. And share it on social media to help my blog grow.

150,000 page views!

Looking at the status bar at my blog I realized that I have reached 150 thousand views, and you might have noticed that I didn’t post a status update like this in a while. I decided to celebrate the bigger milestones, as they began to happen more often (thankfully).

Passport rush!

Over the last few months my blog attracted thousands of Libyan readers trying desperately to reserve an appointment to take the passport photo, my blog views spike on Thursdays (as it’s the only day the reservation system is open on), so in sense these people aren’t here for my blog, they think it’s associated with the passports somehow and most of the comments are questions that I shouldn’t be getting! The people who actually work for the overmanning and get paid for it should be asked these questions!

The polar ends are Thursdays!

Welcome in!

Well you know the old saying: All publicity is good publicity and as long as my blog is out there and getting views, I should be happy! Even when I know for sure that these lurkers don’t care for my blog or what I post, they just want a passport.

Maybe what I wanted is for people to come to my blog for the things I’m passionate about and actually enjoy, like open source, Linux, and video games! We’ll get to that sometime I hope!

Posting less, meaning more

I’ve also managed to pace myself, I try to post at least once a week, I realize now that blogging has more work to it than creating posts, right now my goal is to finish all the drafts I have on before the end of the year (hopefully).

Social media interactions

I’ve also reached 22,000 twitter followers thanks to my follow back system, I’m not even trying that hard to get fans, but I guess it’s my thing now and it’s far too late for me to go back.

As I use Twitter as my main platform to connect with readers and promote my blog it’s important for me that my account is synced with a good followback ratio and to have some fresh accounts following every now and then.

Final words

Thank you all for being a part of this journey, and I hope to keep your trust and support. I’ll see you soon in another site update.

Please share this post and help my blog grow!

How to be a consistent blogger and have fun doing it?

Many of my long time readers keep asking me this question: How do you manage to stay consistent with blogging? To be honest! Blogging isn’t as easy as sending a tweet or updating your Facebook status! But it is very enjoyable and more self satisfying than the two!

The excitement of beginnings

Let’s face it, many people get so exited at the beginning, and would spend hours on end choosing the blog template and colors, customizing it with cool widgets, some go as far as setting a proper sitemap and getting their SEO on. And then nothing, for weeks then for months!! What happens is that early burst of excitement ended and they found themselves with an empty blog with no topics and no readers, and then they abandon the blog once and for all! I know this happens very often, because I’ve been there more than once!

The joy of a new beginning

After a strong start people tend to lost interest fast and drift away from blogging.

Over the next few steps I’ll cover some things I had to overcome to be more consistent which I believe many people face whenever blogging and would like a little help with that.

Success doesn’t happen overnight

If success would happen over night it wouldn’t have been so satisfying would it?
Like many things in life blogging needs some work before you can see the results, luckily it doesn’t take much for your blog to stand up on it’s own and gain interest, besides blogging is so much fun that “work” isn’t actually work when you look at it!

Goals and success

Set goals for yourself on your blog

Like a successful career or a successful family life, you need to plan your blogging and set clear goals, your goals could be some of these: Create more posts. Reach a certain number of posts. Reach a certain number of page views. All of the above! Any thing you like! And you need to celebrate achieving your blogging goals! (I’ll be talking about it in a bit).

Blog about your passion subjects

If you are interested in sports, fashion, media or politics. Then it is your lucky day! Each of these subjects make a great blog! And those are just example! You can blog about almost anything! And since you are passionate about it. Then writing would be so much fun! Writing about a passion subject is a great deal of fun, you will look forward to blogging and it will be something you look forward to on a busy week!

Link blogging with a daily habit

It’s always a good idea to link an existing habit of yours with a new one you are trying to develop, if you are a coffee person then maybe you want to try to write a post while having a tasty cup of Joe, or maybe blog after coming home from a good run and a cold shower! Soon enough the two habits will become one and you find yourself sitting to blog without even thinking of it. Make sure to keep your drink (coffee or tea) away from the keyboard/laptop or you might spill the contents of the cup on the laptop, ouch!

Dealing with some minor nuisances

If you feel blogging is a heavy chore then you need to read on! Clearly identify what bothers you and makes blogging less enjoyable. Could be that your chair is uncomfortable and causes you back pain? Or that your computer is painfully slow and makes blogging a living hell, I’ll be posting soon on how to speed up your computer with little to no cost!
Or that simply you don’t like the place you sit at, then simply go somewhere else!  Now that we took care of the annoying bugs that many bloggers have or suffer from silently on daily basis, lets get to the fun stuff!!

Create a flow

Once you got your minor issues worked out. You can finally sit and work on your blogging. Either it’s the living room shed on lazy afternoon, or your favorite coffee shop downtown, or a park near you that you always feel good when you visit or drop by it for an afternoon walk. Where ever you feel motivated to sit and create is fine!
As long you create a consistent habit that happens naturally without forcing then you are on the right track.
Setting the place and time will help you stay consistent with your blogging!

Don’t chase perfection

It’s unachievable! And you will achieve nothing! Being a blogger is different from being a writer or a journalist as you get a chance to edit your work without the world falling on your head, and since you use a blogging platform you can edit as many times as you like without “stopping the press” and causing a problem! Stop procrastinating and publish those drafts, they are good enough!

Perfection
Nothing is perfect

Something to add to your resume

When preparing a resume its always helpful to add some interests and hobbies to give a little bit about your personality to your potential employer. Any human resource manager would be impressed to see that you blog on regular basis. Not only that you will gain respect for what you do (as many people aren’t consistent enough to do that) your chances of getting certain jobs will increase compared to others with the same level of skill and experience! (coming from a personal experience).

Did someone say money?

Money is the power that moves the world. Love it or hate it we all need money to live. You can make money off your blog with some basic advertise strategy such as Google Adsense. If your blog is a heavily visited one then you can make a decent amount of money doing what you love and having fun connecting with your fans. That’s inspiring 😉 Even without money involvement, the sense of satisfaction of knowing that your writing could inspire another human, help them solve a problem or change their lives to the better is the best feeling ever! Blogging will help you reach people you never dreamed you could ever reach and have a positive impact on their lives!
Write with good intent and good things will happen!

Be proud with what you do

You work hard on your blog, so its OK to brag a little about it (don’t be a jerk and ruin it for the rest of us!) It’s a blogger’s duty to offer a helping hand to his readers and be sociable and modest with them Encourage other people to blog too! You might think you aren’t that good, but compared to an absolute novice you know a lot! Get them started on the basics and offer some support and that is guaranteed to rekindle your love with blogging!

Connect with other bloggers

Seems like a given, but some  bloggers isolate themselves from society and don’t communicate enough with fellow bloggers. It would be a good idea of get together with other bloggers who share your interests, it will inspire you to write more and grow better as a blogger in general!

Reward yourself

It maybe silly! But offering yourself a little reward after writing a post and publishing it could wonders! It depends on you and what you think of as a reward. It could be something simple like a candy bar or something more meaningful as a walk on the beach (if you happen to live near one).
If a reward can encourage a student to study, why not you?

Have fun blogging!

Blogging should be something you enjoy doing! An escape from everyday stress and drama and a change from your daily working pace (unless you work as a professional blogger, then I have some bad news for you!).

Blogging is fun

You are making a difference

Since you are blogging about the experiences you had and your journey through life, you are helping someone else without even knowing it! When blogging the world is your stage and you may never know who read your post and felt better about themselves and decided to change their lives for the better. Therefore you are making a difference and it’s only a matter of time before someone tells you that! It will make your day, trust me 😉

I hope these pointers help you jump start your blogging career! Share them with your friends and family, and let the blogging spirit spread!

MY BLOG HAS REACHED 100,000 PAGE VIEWS!! (Video message inside).

I am really happy and a bit surprised too, I didn’t expect this milestone to arrive this soon!!

My calculations were off by an entire month! Based on the traffic and site views, this update wasn’t supposed to happen until September, I guess the blog was doing better than I thought! It caught me by surprise!!
100,000 page views!!
I’ve been building towards this update for so long, I can’t believe it finally arrived, I missed the magical moment when the counter turned 100,000 (thank you LTT) and despite some minor hiccups, I managed to make it here thankfully.
I promised my fans I’ll make a thank you video when I reach a 100,000 views, you can find it on this link.

Thanks to all of my regular readers, family and friends. And I’ll see you in another update 🙂
